Krupp 6.5cm Breech Loading Cannon

Description

Rare Antique 1893 German Krupp 6.5cm rifled breech loading mule cannon, in excellent overall condition, matching numbers to both gun and carriage.

It has a steel barrel with sliding steel wedge breech, 11 groove rifling and steel elevating rear-sight, and the breech is marked “Fried Krupp Essen A R No 12”, and it is trunnion mounted  on its steel carriage with leather straps for accessories/tools, a steel axle with twelve spoke wooden wheels, steel hubs and steel bands on the wheels. The matching carriage has brass data plate stating “Fried Krupp Essen AR No.12”

It is a very rare item, the only other known surviving example (serial no. 7) sold in USA in 2015 at auction where it was stated as being “The only survivor of this particular type of cannon that we are aware of” – it sold for $40,250 (approx. £31,000) at the James D Julia Auction, This example has been in a private UK based collection for a number of years and is now offered for sale

Historical note: “These guns were made to be “portable” to mountainous terrain by being able to be readily disassembled, packed onto mules or horses as components, and then reassembled at whatever position they were to be employed”.
